A GPS device has taken place of the conventional magnetic compass in no time. And why not, if instead of getting only the four dimensions if one get the navigational map of a geographic location he is in then it is many a times better and accurate in finding locations and directions. A GPS handheld device works that way only. It lets you get a specific geographical position of the device on the map and gives you a correct position with a margin of few feet.
For doing so the GPS device connects to the satellites and the satellites in turn give the correct position information back to the device. The GPS navigation system uses a host of satellites that orbit the Earth. The satellites communicate with land-based stations to always know their own positions in space. Your GPS unit communicates with the satellites to determine your distance from the satellites - and thus your position on the Earth.
There are different types of GPS handheld devices available in the market. The most common types are the one which are sued in the car navigation system and the other which are used as individual navigation or pocket GPS systems. The other industrial GPS systems are equipment tracking devices, mapping devices and surveying devices. Of these, for general use the car navigation devices and the Personal navigation systems are more popular and widely used.
The other common handheld GPS devices are
- Automotive and Travel GPS
- Mapping Handheld GPS
- Motorcycle and ATV GPS
- Fitness and cycling GPS
- Marine GPS
